Six Used Cars Dominate India’s Resale Market, Taking 20.3% of Sales in 2026

Six models account for 20.3% of Cars24 used-car sales through July 2026, led by the Maruti Suzuki Swift at 4.8%, as practical and economical cars dominate resale demand.

Six models alone account for nearly one in every five used cars sold through one of India’s largest organised resale platforms, highlighting the strong and consistent demand for familiar, practical and economical vehicles in the country’s second-hand car market.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift, Wagon R 1.0, Honda City, Hyundai i10, Grand i10 and Swift Dzire together account for 20.3% of sales, while the Swift alone holds a 4.8% share, the largest of any single model.

India’s used car market has continued to grow faster than the new-car market for the past few years. CRISIL Ratings expects used-car volumes to grow 8% to 10% this fiscal to about 6 million units, more than twice the pace of new cars.

City buyers seeking reliable vehicles without stretching their budgets are among the factors supporting demand. A well-kept second-hand car can offer an alternative to newer vehicles in the same price range. The continued presence of a small group of models near the top of resale volumes also points to consistent preferences among Indian used-car buyers.

The figures are based on Cars24’s internal transaction data through July 2026, covering the best-selling used cars in India. Maruti Suzuki accounts for roughly a third of every car sold through the platform, with a 33% share, while Hyundai follows at 22%. The remaining share is divided among other manufacturers.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift leads the list with a 4.8% share, the highest for any individual model. The model has remained a strong seller in new-car showrooms for two decades, and that popularity has carried into the resale market, particularly among younger, first-time buyers who have grown up seeing the Swift on Indian roads.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 accounts for 3.4% of sales. Its tall-boy design and low running costs make it an option for buyers seeking a used Maruti car with sufficient space without taking on higher fuel expenses. This has helped it maintain stronger demand than some more feature-focused hatchbacks in the used segment.

The Honda City also holds a 3.4% share and is the best-selling sedan on the list, ahead of the Swift Dzire. It attracts buyers moving up from hatchbacks who want additional cabin space while remaining below the SUV segment.

The Hyundai i10 accounts for 3.3% of sales. Although Hyundai stopped selling the nameplate new years ago, the model continues to attract buyers looking for a compact vehicle that is inexpensive to maintain and easy to park in urban areas.

The Hyundai Grand i10, successor to the original i10, holds a 2.7% share. It provides a slightly roomier cabin and additional features compared with its predecessor. Buyers moving up from an even older car may therefore choose the Grand i10 rather than moving directly to a newer model. The model was also offered with both petrol and diesel engines, unlike the i10, giving it wider appeal among buyers who drive longer distances and seek the mileage typically associated with diesel engines.

Hyundai’s presence in two positions among the six best-selling models reflects the continued relevance of parts availability and familiarity among local mechanics for used-car buyers. These factors are particularly relevant when comparing older small-car models.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire accounts for another 2.7% of sales. The compact sedan combines the Swift’s reliability with the practicality of a boot, targeting buyers seeking sedan functionality without sedan-level pricing.

Taken together, the six models reveal a consistent pattern in Cars24’s transaction data. Five of the six are hatchbacks or compact sedans, while all six are known more for low running costs than for outright features.

The sales pattern indicates the importance of proven reliability and manageable ownership costs in India’s used-car market. For buyers considering second-hand vehicles, the sustained demand for these models shows how established models continue to shape resale volumes even as the broader automotive market evolves.
